I don’t have too many pet peeves, but one of them is litter and trash. It just pisses me off as a taxpayer to pay to pick litter, it saddens me tremendously the amount of wildlife that are killed by litter and I am horrified by the total lack of respect of people toward the environment and disappointed by the lack of consideration of other people by people who litter and trash our earth and people’s property.
An avid follower of Steve’s Litter Scorecard, a new site just came to my attention called Litterati. Litterati is using Instagram to post images of litter throughout the world. I am going to be able to fill up their stream, the sheer amount of litter you see, avoid and walk everyday is amazing and using hopefully sites, like Litterati will bring attention to this global problem.
As they continue to build their community and gain more Instagram followers, the following numbers will change. I find it interesting the statistics. They also have a ‘impact’ page with a map, which pretty much details who is snapping those shots.
For those who are on Instagram, please follow them, post your pictures and lets try and clean up our world. I know, I will and as the San Diego beach trash cleaner, you will definitely see lots of litter from Southern California.

Hey Cathy,
Thank you so much for spreading the Litterati movement. Our community is picking up close to 1000 pieces a week and growing. We’re excited for you and your followers to give Litterati a try. It’s this simple – Find a piece of litter, photograph it with Instagram, add the hashtag “#Litterati”, and throw out or recycle the litter.
Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Jeff Kirschner

I dont use instagram, but might have to start. Littering infuriates me. Laziness is all it is. My son and I pick up litter on his Grandparents street. We pick up litter in front of peoples houses while we walk our dogs. It starts with Me. Be a good role model for the younger generation. Clean up after yourself!

Hi Corinne,
Thanks for your comment. And we love the work that you and your son are doing. Since the time of this article, the Litterati community has grown tremendously, and in fact, we just released an iOS application.
If you’re interested in learning more about how to use the app (it’s simple), the data we’re collecting, and the work we’re doing with schools, just shoot us an email at support@litterati.org.
We’d love to chat.
