A cooperative effort between Martinsville and Henry County that uses inmate labor to clean up county roads has been successful since it began in the spring, a county official said.
The program, in which city inmates pick up litter from county roads, began in May. Through November, inmates picked up 3,233 bags of litter and covered 105 to 110 miles of county roads that include U.S. 220 from the North Carolina/Virginia line to Martinsville; Oak Level Road; and U.S. 220 north to the Bassett Forks area, according to Mike Amos, director of refuse for the Henry County Public Service Authority.
