Steve Spacek’s “litter scorecard” is not about litter. He bases his rankings on issues that have nothing to do with litter and much of his information is inaccurate. For example, much of his scoring is based on laws such as bottle return that have been proven to have no effect on litter. Another score is based on whether states have a specific litter slogan and states that these slogans impact litter. This belief is erroneous. In fact, one of the states with the strongest slogan–Texas–reports that they are not seeing a reduction in litter although the slogan is well-established. Furthermore, he inaccurately reports that South Carolina does not have a slogan. The state, in fact, has a state-supported and active anti-litter program in PalmettoPride and their slogan “Litter Trashes Everyone.” South Carolina ranks high as a destination state and is a magnet for business development and tourism due to the natural beauty of the state and friendliness of our citizens, Mr. Spacek has not performed due diligence in creating his “scorecard.” Posting it is spreading inaccurate propaganda based on faulty data.
