In 2008, Mattel gave the ‘number of Barbies they sold as about 94.5 Million per year. That is about three Barbies sold every second. Whether it is an Disney Princess, Ariel or Barbie, when found on the beach they are usually too trashed to donate here in the United States.
Ergo the new Barbie Project! I used to put them in the shoes in my shoe fence, but unfortunately they don’t last too long in the sun.. Those darn SunSpots.. just ruin a gals complexion! Found objects, boat from the beach, wire container, found on the beach along with single shoes.
So what’s the story with Mattel, the maker of Barbie. Have they greened up their products? Back in 2011 they were accused of non-sustainable business practices via deforestation in Indonesia. ‘Greenpeace said it had evidence that Barbie doll packaging comes from Indonesian rainforests, accusing toy manufacturers such as Mattel and Walt Disney Co of contributing to the country’s rapid deforestation.’ (Source) Soon after that Mattel released a Press Release …’Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT), today announced the launch of new sustainable sourcing principles to guide the company’s procurement of paper and wood fiber used in its packaging and products.
It appears according to their reports they are doing something to reduce waste and carbon emissions. They have 15 manufacturing plants in Canada, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand. China and Indonesia, China, Thailand and Indonesia are top producers of the worlds ocean trash. China is the world top polluting country. Deforestation is significant in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
Something to think about.
