When you think of beer gardens on a warm, sunny day you probably think of boisterous crowds, lots of cheers, long lines and mostly good times being had. That was not the case at the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival on Saturday. I swear I saw tumbleweeds blowing through that area when I walked by at 1 p.m. That’s not to say there wasn’t a dozen or so patrons enjoying themselves and that the garden didn’t see more folks end up there later. It’s just that the tens of thousands of people who attended the festival were packing the various green zones and getting it on with their Earth Day education, initiation and salutation. It was very impressive and immediately inspiring.
I was able to catch up with David Fortson, founder of Loa Tree, who ran the production and marketing for Santa Barbara Earth Day. He spoke to the inspiring Santa Barbara Community and two-day event.
“In my opinion it’s the best of the Santa Barbara Community since it brings together eco-conscious folks who believe in building community, who believe in a more ecologically aggressive future who want to lessen their impact on the Earth, but create a more vibrant society to live in.” Fortson said.
The festival’s theme this year was Powered by the People and was all about getting people to use their bodies and their minds to help create a fossil-free future.
