Cigarette Butts and their packaging are one of the most littered and toxic items on our roads and beaches with the littering rate at 65%. Worse yet, that 77% of people do not consider cigarettes litter, thinking tobacco products are biodegradable.

- 1.69 BILLION pounds of butts estimated in the trash each year.
- 230,000 cigarette butts collected from California beaches during the 2000 Coastal Cleanup Day in one day. Cigarette butts were the number one trash item found (http://www.cigarettelitter.org).
- 1 in 5 every piece of litter picked up on the beaches is a cigarette butt (Ocean Conservancy)
- A single cigarette butt with traces of tobacco in 1 liter of water killed 50%of the fish in the water (Study by Elli Slaughter of San Diego State University)
- 1000- 3000 people are killed or injured every year byt fiires caused by cigarettes
Fortunately Terracycle has initated a cigarette recycling program and there are over 200 Waste Brigades in place. Cities such as New York, St. Louis, and New Jersey have instigated Cigarette Recycling Programs.
There are other alternatives to to recycling cigarette butt, like making art or even clothing.
