Across the whole of Greater Manchester, there were 42,020 incidents – but only 99 fly-tippers were prosecuted. Items dumped included mattresses, sofas, TVs and clothes. Earlier this year, 61 mobile phones and a microwave oven were found in a trawl of the city’s canals.
After Manchester, Salford had the worst record, with 3,392 incidents. Wigan and Stockport were also high, with 2,958 and 2,855 cases respectively. Oldham had the fewest with 1,096, according to the Environment Department. Bury had 2,625 incidents, Tameside 2,453, Bolton 2,410, Trafford 1,558 and Rochdale 2,379.
