Many people are put off by the price of reclaimed wood, thinking hey, it’s used, it should be cheaper, it should be free. While many people want to get rid of that wood sitting around the house or office, there are many reasons besides not killing trees as to why reclaimed wood is more expensive and why using reclaimed wood is good.
This video from Resource Conservation Group explains the features and benefits of using reclaimed wood.

I am building a home and very much wanted to use reclaimed lumber. I watched your video that attempts to justify the cost, and it is not compelling in any way. It seems that folks are just inflating the price, since so many people want to green their homes/businesses, which is a shame. At most, the reclaimed lumber should be no more than the price of new wood.
Robbie says
Reclaimed wood floors seem logical and responsible until the price stops you from your wooden tracks. Seriously? They’re TWICE the price of brand new floors! And when the emperor has removed all his clothes, you realize you are in reality just buying old, used wood that someone else thinks is trash.
Chris says
Our reclaimed lumber prices are sometimes even lower than new wood, just in case anyone is looking, not all salvage operations take advantage.
Michael J. Krasinski says
My company in Wisconsin doesn’t rake customers for reclaimed materials, but we have to consider the effort that goes into the operations of reclaiming such as denailing, scraping or sanding and saving longer lengths of material is a factor also. I think it’s a great way to save the fabric that built this country’s heritage.
