Synthetic Grass is becoming more popular for both residential and commercial purposes. For businesses, it is an easy way to have the lawn take care of itself, without hiring a maintenance staff. Households have also followed, seeing the advantages of having a perfect lawn all year long, especially for people that live in wintry climates.
Synthetic grass is an alternative to real grass, providing the same features as if you were to have a real lawn in your backyard. As someone with allergies, this new option for lawns caught my attention.
Benefits of synthetic turf:
- Less Maintence- no watering, no weeds, no mowing,- saves time and money, and no gardeners!
- Saves Money- no more gas for power lawnmowers, no more replacement turf, no more pesticides and less water bills.
- Quieter- Yes, no more noisy lawnmowers!
- No Water Needed! Saves water bill especially good in drought areas! Did you know the average lawn uses 21,000 gallons of water per year!
- No toxic pesticides!- Great for those with allergies, asthma and pulmonary diseases, plus save the environment. Did you know that American homeowners use 23 Million Metric Tons of fertilize per year and 70 Million pounds of pesticides and herbicides on our lawns every year.
- Saves Landfill Space!= no more lawn clippings that just go into landfills!
The first question that comes to mind is “What if I have a dog.” With about 60% of the U.S. population owning a dog, the synthetic grass is pet friendly. Meaning, animal waste will not absorb into the lawn and destroy it.
A couple of Synthetic Grass Recommendations
- Easy Turf: This is Southern California’s largest synthetic grass company, servicing the needs of commercial, residential, and putting greens. It has a long life expectancy and is environmentally friendly. Especially during a drought, water conservation is number one priority. Easy Turf saves over 32,000,000 gallons of water annually. And in the end, Easy Turf will pay for itself. Some big name companies such as The San Diego Zoo have made the switch to Easy Turf. For more information or estimates, visit http://www.easyturf.com/

You gotta be kidding me? I’ll give you the allergy defense, but other than that there are no reasonable arguments that synthetic turf is greener than real grass.
Synthetic grass is essentially made of plastic which is derived from petroleum. Not very green.
Lawn clippings in landfills are becoming a thing of the past as more people return the clippings to the lawn or compost them. A synthetic lawn that ends up in a landfill will be there for a millennia.
Also, a real lawn does not necessarily need pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They can be managed organically and even maintained with reel mowers, electric mowers, or clean burning propane powered mowers.
Not to mention that fake grass looks gross. It’s fake! It makes a landscape look gaudy and unnatural. The only people really pushing fake lawns are the ones selling it, as there are few benefits when compared to real grass.

Easy Turf is environmentally friendly? Ha! What about the rubber they put in their turf is that “environmentally friendly”?

As much as I agree with you in everything you have said, but the reality is this 1.) Most people overwater their lawns 2.) We in Southern Calif. are in a drought and saving water is a priority because our government wants to build more houses 3.) When we had all those rains, people did not, repeat did not turn off their automatic sprinklers. 4.) Most of the sprinklers still waste water, as I watch gallons going down the storm drains 5.) In my condo they use pesticides, yes, pesticides when they don’t need to and when I walk you can smell the pesticides from other peoples yards. Unfortunately most people don’t care.
Personally, my yard has no grass and I compost and all the plants are native, which is very rare in my neighborhood, although it is changing.

Artificial grass is extremely environmentally friendly. Not only will you save thousands of gallons of water each year by not having to turn on sprinklers, but you will also not be exposed to dangerous fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.

That was a very informative article on artificial grass. Many artificial grass companies have been in the industry for many years. With the advancements in technology since its debut, artificial grass has proven to become an eco-friendly solution not only for commercial areas, but a more home owner trend in the residential community. The facts explained in the article above are the reasons why people choose to switch. I would definitely recommend it.

did you end up going the fake route or the real route?
Cathy says
Didn’t do either, used wood and part of yard is compost. Planted native plants

thanks for the follow-up

Great blog, very interesting. Only now discovered your writing and have been busy reading all of your content all morning, so wanted to leave a message to say thanks. My husband recently changed to artificial grass, and is loving how little maintenance he has to do now, no more mowing or watering, etc. We are also glad that our pollen allergies are not an issue now.
