  5. IMPORTANT… or not ??

    Are most reclaim and salvage companies truly green?
    Are they a driving force in the destrution of historical buildings and lumber?
    Are they only after the money wood and burning up or destroying the rest?
    Are those “Green/Reclaim” companies sucking up history and resources as fast as they can?

    Ask your supplier how much of their structures they recycle. This is the
    point where they pour it on. I am a demolition guy first and foremost and have been forced to burn or store 60 plus percent of some strutures due to the lack of development in this industry.
    Meanwhile the “Green/Recaimed” retail outlets are paying guys to burn 50 % of the lumber and on to the next project. Flooring is the driving force in this and if a companies mainsty is flooring they probably have a hand in this driving force.

    We do not have the high mark up nor do we see a need to waste wood to
    fill orders. If a husband and wife can find the balance then the fat cat retailers could as well. Through investigation you will find these
    companies are anything but green and care very little about how much is
    actually preserved out of these old structures.

    In closing.. Call your “Green/Reclaimed” company and ask if the will buy pieces under 4 ft, pieces under 5 ” wide, 6×6 post with notches, round post,
    Poplar 2×6, and the list goes on. Even if they cannot buy it you will not find this stuff on their yards. I am feed up with the portrayal of this industry.

    If you know half a barn was burned to provide your lovely floor thats not to green.

  9. @Jason Neusse, you make a lot of good and valid points 🙂 We are a smaller company that salvages old barns and other buildings in order to recycle the wood. We try to use every single piece of wood…if there is a void, we peg it, a crack, we do a butterfly peg. we even use the ends of the wood scraps to make cobblestone. I agree with you about the companies that are after the almighty dollar…just using the “good stuff” and discarding the rest of it. What a waste! We are very passionate about preserving these historical treasures, I just wish everyone involved felt the same 🙂

  14. I have found that what Mr Jason Neusse is claiming is a complete fact. We are taking down old old barns. The lumber is so beautiful that you want to keep it for yourself but that is really not a bright idea since you will run out of places to put it. We have put 3 huge barns on the ground in the past 2 weeks. We are in a deliema. Some want the best wood and leave the other. That will not happen. If they can find a use for all the lumber then we will sell at a reasonable price and not a price to rob anyone. We want our customer to feel they can afford anything a rich man can afford. And I can find something to do with every piece of lumber believe it or not.
