I have always wondered what happens to all the leftover slivers of hotel soap, the half bottles of shampoo and other bath items. Because it’s such a waste, I usually bring it home and continue to use it until it’s gone. Why waste? What I didn’t know is that an organization Clean the World takes leftover soap and shampoo and donates it to the needy. Another organization called Global Soap Project also sends soap overseas. To keep it local donate to your local shelter.
I Just Gotta Tell Ya:
- 93,349 Hotels and Motels in the USA alone.
- The average hotel has 200 rooms and 4 Million Rooms per night Globally
- Soap is crucial in combating diarrhea- with over 2 million people die from diarrhea every year.
- Millions of bars of soap and slivers land up on landfills and our groundwater
What can you do?
- Donate any unused soaps to the above organizations or your local shelter.
- Recycling Soap Scraps into new soaps
- Stretcher– Good Recipes and uses for Soap Scraps
- Bright Hub– Recycling Soaps into Guest Soaps

I work at a hotel in Salt Lake city and I want to start having the hotel recycle it’s used bath soap and possibly it’s shampoo. Is there a place in Salt Lake City that provides this service or a place where I could donate the soap?
Cathy says
Most shelters will take the soap, try contacting them first.

I work in a hotel in Seattle also, and have been working to get my company involved in soap recycling. Some shelters will take unused soap, but working with organizations like “Clean the World” or the “Global Soap Project” are a much better option for all those thousands of bars per month that are used once or twice before being thrown away. Check out the websites: http://www.cleantheworld.org/ http://www.globalsoap.org/

I don’t purchase or recycle soap, try kickstarters to raise money.

Dear environment lovers =}… I have just been researching this topic, and it seems there are two companies out there in this subject- “the global soap project” and “clean the world” companies. they have very self explanatory websites and even contact info- I would get in touch with the heads of the companies in person to get their support on getting your hotel to sign up with the program. And regarding starting your own factory- “the soap project” clearly states they would be more then happy to work with new business owners and entrepreneurship that feel they have passion for the subject- so for sure try them out too. =) best regards! I loved this idea too and hopefully will get my school on the way to doing yearly drives from our dorms to recycle all remaining toiletries! Feel free to email me at lunitari.dianna@gmail.com if you feel like sharing ideas.
Good luck on all your initiatives!

I had no idea that so much soap was wasted in the US every year. My wife and I are looking for ways that we can help give back to the world and provide for those less fortunate. We will have to start recycling all of the hotel soap we don’t use so we can help those less privileged than us!
