One of the best things that has happened on our San Diego beaches during Spring Break time.. is the weather. Cloudy, Cold and Rainy! Not only do we need the rain, it has deterred much of the spring break riff- raff and loads of beach trash! We have avoided much of the noise and parties. Not to say there hasn’t been trash.
Last year the USA Today College, reported that 40% of college students go to beaches over spring break and spend $1 billion annually. These trips are “rife with alcohol and drugs.” I can attest to that as the place next door rents to college students!
How much litter do college students generate?
- In March 2017, on a Fort Lauderdale Beach, 850 pounds was reported being picked up by beach cleaners.
- “It’s crazy. It’s a bunch of college kids, and I saw trash everywhere. Everybody was throwing their cans everywhere,” Andrew Katz said. (kristv, March 2018, Port Aransas, Texas)
Right now.. I thank mother earth for rain and cold weather otherwise the trash would have quadripled!

Isn’t it interesting how many normally sensible individuals and city councils are willig to put up with such disgraceful behavior for the sake of more money? I suppose it is merely a reflection of our culture’s warped values, as a whole.
