One would think that when surfing, you are out with nature, swimming with dolphins.. but surfing can be hard on the ocean. Broken surfboards, wax, broken leashes, wetsuits and booties get left behind. Plus what the toxic materials boards are made of.
Worse, there are now disposable styrofoam surfboards, that break alot and are left just lying on the beach.
It is alway heartening to hear of people that reuse trash to create surfboards. There are surfboards made with cigarette butts, made with recycled plastics, wood and bottles, but this is a new one. A New Hampshire man made a surfboard with styrofoam Dunkin Donut Cups…. 700 of them.
2nd place winner of a recycled surfboard contest, Korey Nolan… used 700 Dunkin’ Donuts coffee cups. After compressing the cups together with epoxy, he then used a flexible silicone heat blanket for snowboard building to flash cure the epoxy in 40 minutes and used bamboo plywood from an old snowboard to insert as the stringer. The fins were made entirely of plastic straws. (Surfer)
Dunkin responded via Instagram with this good news: d
@koreytnolan In fact, yes! 😘 We plan to eliminate all foams cups in all US restaurants by mid-2020 & replace them with a new, double-walled paper cup. We’re on track to meet our goal and are projected to have over 70% of our system converted by the end of 2019! You can read more here: https://bit.ly/2nOBcNq
Love it and so happy that we have such creative people in this world.
