After a litter audit found that cigarette butts make up 25% of the litter items in the city- Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco has proposed a 33-cents-a pack- fee on cigarettes to pay for the cost of cleaning up cigarette butt litter.
The 33-cent- increase would raise $11 million to offset the cost. As noted in previous posts, picking up after litterers is a huge financial drain on broke and financially challenged city budgets.
