You can tell summer has really arrived in Mission Beach, judging from the sheer amount of trash and broken glass bottles. Saturday was so bad had to jettison beach toys and recyclables in 3 separate piles along the beach at Belmont Park on both Saturday and Sunday.
First I want to apologize for the same images I used for Drinking on The Beach, but was so pissed this morning, as I was dragging 7 soggy, sandy towels out of the surf this morning. Get this on the 2 busiest days of the week at the beach… THERE IS NO BEACH CLEANING. That means the only thing that is being done is garbage collection of which is a hit and miss situation. The Park and Rec Department does work on weekends, but their first priority is the bathrooms. Can you even imagine what they look like, if the beach looks like this? Thankfully a woman named Bonnie (another plogger) often shows up to clean Belmont Park and she does a great job!
On Monday morning 3;30 am, drove my car up to Belmont Park to pick up trash. Loaded up the car with 1 load. Took wagon down the boardwalk to pick trash and do the jetty for load #2. Dropped wagon off at my house and walked back up the beach at the tide line following the 2nd plogger, picked up another 2 small bags of trash for Load #3, left more stuff at Lifeguard Station #13 and drove home.
One day of discarded towels, sheets, blankets and clothing left in front of Belmont Park. Not seen are about 20 socks, 10 pair of shoes, a couple more sheets, some other towels in the trash can.
Discarded and forgotten clothing at the back of the restroom at Belmont Park. Not seen, more socks and shoes and underwear.
Lets not forget the BBQ’s left at the beach. This was BBQ #2 at Belmont Park.
Partying with glass bottles and there is broken glass in that mix.
Normally these recyclables are either on the beach or in the trash cans. I salvaged the recycles as much as possible. This is only a few of the glass beer cans. Note: No littering, no drinking and no glass is allowed on the beach.
117 plastic bottles, 52 beer cans, 35 soda cans, 20 glass containers mainly liquor. 3 gallons is saved water!
Another 3 gallons of saved water.
What the loads look like at the end of the run. Due to space and weight much is left behind. Lots of wet towels and clothing.
What is sad… this is only a part of what is left on the beach. Missed most of the beach at Belmont, didn’t fully do the Jetty and none of the green areas. Plus, this is after the salvagers are out and other people that pick up trash.
Summer is here…
