I love Mexico and over the last several years have spent a large portion of the year in various parts. Several years ago, I spent 4 months on the Yucatan, primarily in, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Akumal and Tulum. My favorite is Akumal- Tulum except for the Beach Trash.
Tulum was known as this hippie-eco enclave, instead it has turned into a series of pricey boutique hotels, nightclubs with loud techno music, with plastic water bottles all over.
Take a walk on the beach and you will find the all the same plastics. Bottle caps are the norm and food wrapping. The exception is the hotels lining the beach, as they pick up their trash.
While it is great to see the ruins and the turtles, it is disheartening to see how the trash is killing a beautiful seascape.
Many people love Playa Del Carmen, for me, I may as well be in San Diego or Miami. All the major designers are there, the food is not that cheap, even Cozumel which is run by the Cruise Ships has a Hooters.
